Employee capacity, productivity and performance
Three terms are often used as if they were one.
- Productivity is what gets produced.
- Performance is how well the work is done, over time.
- Capacity is what people have available to do it.
The relationship
Output can hold for a while after capacity starts to fall. People cover with extra hours, shorter breaks and borrowed weekends. That is why output alone is a late signal. Performance that depends on spending capacity faster than it comes back is not sustainable.
What to measure
- Output, because it is what the business needs.
- Engagement, because it shows whether people want to do the work.
- Capacity, because it shows whether they can keep doing it.
The three together show whether performance is sustainable. Any one of them alone can look fine while another is not.
What this page does not say
It does not say that raising capacity raises output by a set amount. Anyone who gives a figure for the return on capacity needs to show where it comes from.
